Description of the Trans Affirming Clinical Care Program
Transgender and gender diverse people have higher rates of mental health difficulties, compared to their cisgender peers, likely due to the stress and social security difficulties LGBTQIA2S+ folks face on a daily basis. These difficulties are often further exacerbated due to the fact that there are few affirming mental health resources/therapists that are easily accessible to transgender and gender diverse people.
To help address this concern, The University of Calgary Psychology Clinic in collaboration with Skipping Stone Foundation (a local non for profit providing services for transgender and gender diverse people) started to offer affirming, accessible psychological services on a sliding scale (pay what you can) in September 2022 for transgender and gender diverse folks, who are among those most vulnerable to discrimination and mental health difficulties within the LGBTQIA2S+ community.
Proceeds ($10) from every shirt sold will go towards providing accessible trans affirming therapy at the University of Calgary Psychology Clinic and will help to offset the ongoing costs of offering these services (costs for the space, staff, supervisors, therapy materials, etc.). Through this charity initiative, the University of Calgary bookstore is helping more trans and gender diverse folks access the services they need and deserve.
